What color to paint a Dining Room or Kitchen

July 10, 2010 - 7:27 am 3 Comments

Both rooms have openings to view living room which is a warm soft gold with ivory trim. These rooms will have ivory trim. I have a gallon of a pale olive that looks good with the golden living room and it’s decor too but don’t know which room to use it on. I was thinking of Rust color but never used a shade like that before. If you think Rust is possibly good in which room should it go? Would a lighter or darker shade of the green or gold work better? The Dining has gunstock oak floors so something that enhances them is ideal right, The Kithcen is tore out and I am trying to decide on cabs and counters so no limits on that. The flooring in Kitchen is undecided as well. I was aiming for a french country kitchen with roosters and gold rust and sage maybe but what color counter and cabs?

I would just the rust in the dining room as shades of red are supposed to stimulate the appetite. Use the pale olive that you have in the kitchen. I think "food" colors look good in the kitchen. As for the counters & cabinets, for a French Country look I would go with cream painted cabinets or a red maple. And butcher block countertops.

French Country Theme?

June 27, 2010 - 9:43 am 3 Comments

I am so happy to have found a theme to tie in my elegant scrolling and wrought iron decor with my love for country – roosters and pastoral scenes. What kind of cabinets and counter top (besides granite) do you think for a French Country Theme backdrop? Do you think a natural maple with dark glaze on the edges or ivory painted maple? Wall paint too? And flooring too? I cancelled hardwood for this room because of cleanups and has an entry area that would get too scratched so something else.
The adjoining rooms are a living area -= which I painted a soft gold/darkest creamy yellow color. The dining area is undecided. All three rooms ideally should blend. I have alot of burgundy, sage and warm gold tones decor for living area.

Sounds like you already know what to do, you’re deep into details.

When I think of French style, I think "provencale", which means using local materials. Since it’s country, you want a rougher hand made look, rather than too manufactured.

For counter tops, I would use a tile that looks like a came from a local quarry. If you have red soils, use a reddish tile, for instance. If you dug up a rock in a field nearby, what color and type would be? If there are maple trees outside, use maple. The view out your kitchen window should seem to be an extension of the kitchen itself.

Of course you will avoid linoleum, plastic, chrome, high tech faucets, stainless steel, levelours, and so on.
