Anyone have good ideas for decorating an apartment or making it more "homey" for cheap?

June 24, 2010 - 3:39 am 1 Comment

I’m moving into a 1000 sq ft apartment with white walls and cream carpet. We have sort of ugly (but functional) hand-me-down furniture from the 1970s.

Does anyone have any good ideas for making the apartment cozy or decorating it? Since we are on a very tight budget, anything we could make ourselves or that doesnt require a lot of money would be great. Thanks!

Paint is cheap and makes a huge difference. If you can paint your apartment I would definitely do that. Go for a warm color maybe taupe or if you’re not afraid of color go bolder. You can make curtains out of bed sheets if you can sew. Also hang them above the windows as high as you can to make it look more dramatic. You can also extend them outside the windows to make them look wider. Accessorize with stuff from tag sales or consignment shops. Good luck!!

Where can I find garden decorating ideas, specifically ideas for a residential mailbox?

June 20, 2010 - 5:23 pm 2 Comments

I am interested in finding a website that could provide ideas for decorating the outside of my house. In particular, I am interested in finding an asian or zen-like residential mailbox.

I have always had luck with DIY on tv (the channel if you get it) or Joann Fabrics (i live in CT, though..so nto sure if they have them where you live) but fabric stores offer great stencils, and things you can do to decorate your mailbox! best of luck

Can I start a home base cake decorating business using a recipe I didn’t make?

June 15, 2010 - 1:29 am 7 Comments

I would really like to start baking cakes. People tell me my cakes are to die for and I decorate them so pretty but the cakes from a recipe that is in a cookbook . I don’t want to get into trouble…so my question is "can I start a home business decorating cakes with recipes that i didn’t make up?

You cannot patent recipes. You can however infringe on the intellectual copyrights of the recipe. Ingredients cannot be copywrited…only the process or instructions. Avoid this by (A) not giving the recipe out and/or (B) changing the wording of the instructions. I would be more worried about having a home-based baking business without going through the proper health code channels. That wuill certainly get you in more trouble than thinking that someone will taste your cake and say…I KNOW WHERE THIS RECIPE CAME FROM!! Tell people your recipe is a secret.

What are ideas for decorating, raffles/prizes, gift bags for pampering party?

June 6, 2010 - 8:56 pm 1 Comment

I work at a salon and for mother’s day we are planning a pampering party for some women of a battered women’s shelter. I need ideas for decorating the salon and/or prizes, gift bags, etc…

I would fix up gift bags with beauty related products. Do you sell nail polish at the salon? Maybe put 1 in each giftbag, if you don’t sell nailpolish, Sally’s Hair Supply or Wal-greens has mini nailpolishes you can purchase for $1. You could goto a local department store that sells perfume and see if they have some samples of the perfume to give you, I’d tell them what it is for so they might give you several. Fingernail files, loofa’s, etc. could be placed in the bags. Check your local Dollar Store, alot of times you can buy the loofa’s, bath mits, smaller sizes of lotions , and other beauty products there. Do you know a local Avon agent or Mary Kay rep? If so maybe you can tell them what you are doing and offer to buy a few of their samples for the gift bags. I know the samples cost them and if you offer to buy a few they may be willing to let you purchase some. For another prize, you could also offer a free facial, haircut, or etc to your salon to be used at a later date.
